Glitch text on Discord

Almost every Discord glitch text problem comes down to one thing: people try it in the username field, which is the one field on Discord that cannot take it.

The username trap

This catches more people than everything else combined, so it goes first.

Discord has two name fields, and they behave nothing alike. Your username is your unique handle. Since Discord retired the old name-plus-four-digits system, usernames accept lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and nothing else. That is an allowlist. There is no intensity setting, no alternative generator, and no trick that gets a combining mark through it.

Your display name is what everyone actually sees next to your messages. It allows the full Unicode range, including glitch text, and it does not have to be unique. That is the field you want.

Where to paste it

User Settings, then Profiles, then Display Name. Paste there, not into the Username field above it.

Every Discord field, and what it takes

Limits are Discord's own, checked September 2026. Remember that every combining mark counts as a character, so a 32-character display name holds roughly two glitched letters at high intensity and about eight at low intensity.

Discord fields, character limits and glitch text support
FieldLimitGlitch text?Notes
Message 2,000 Yes The most forgiving field. Full intensity is fine.
Display name 32 Yes Full Unicode allowed, but 32 characters goes fast.
Username 32 No Lowercase letters, numbers, _ and . only. Rejected outright.
About Me 190 Yes Room for a short glitched phrase at moderate intensity.
Server nickname 32 Usually Allowed by Discord, often stripped by server bots.
Custom status 128 Yes Renders well, and short enough to stay readable.
Category name 100 Yes Where most servers put decorative dividers.
Text channel name 100 Partly Discord lowercases and strips some characters.

Making a display name that fits in 32 characters

Thirty-two characters is tight. Three approaches that actually work:

  • Use the Subtle preset. One or two marks per letter keeps the name readable and leaves room for more than two letters.
  • Use a single-mark style. Strikethrough or underline costs exactly one extra character per letter, so a nine-letter name fits comfortably inside 32.
  • Glitch one word. If your name is two words, damage one and leave the other clean. It reads better and costs half as much.

Set your destination to "Discord display name" in the dropdown under the generator and the counter will tell you whether it fits before you paste.

Why a bot keeps resetting your nickname

Server nicknames are allowed to contain glitch text as far as Discord is concerned. Many servers still remove it, because tall combining stacks overflow their line in the member list and push the layout around for everyone else in the channel.

That is a moderation bot enforcing a server rule, not a Discord restriction. A lighter effect usually passes where a heavy one does not, and if it matters, asking a moderator costs nothing.

Decorating a server without wrecking it

Category names are the standard place for decorative text. They are 100 characters, they render reliably, and they sit above the channel list where a divider actually helps.

Text channel names are less predictable, because Discord lowercases them and replaces some characters. Voice channel names are more permissive if you want something fancier.

One request from anyone who has moderated a large server: keep heavy stacking out of channel names people need to find quickly, and out of anything a screen reader user has to navigate. A screen reader announces combining marks individually, which turns a decorated channel list into a wall of accent names.

Sending glitch text in messages

Messages are the one Discord field with real room: 2,000 characters on a free account. You can push intensity as far as you like.

Two things worth knowing. Discord renders combining marks tightly, so text that looked enormous in a browser often looks tamer in the app. And spamming maximum-intensity walls into a busy channel is the fastest way to get muted, because it disrupts everyone else's view of the conversation.

Discord glitch text questions

Why will Discord not let me put glitch text in my username?

Because usernames are not filtered, they are restricted. Since Discord moved to unique usernames, the field accepts lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods only. Combining marks are outside that set, so the field rejects them rather than stripping them. Your display name is the field that takes glitch text.

What is the difference between a Discord username and a display name?

Your username is your unique handle, limited to 2 to 32 characters from a restricted ASCII set, and no two accounts can share one. Your display name is what people actually see, allows the full Unicode range including glitch text and emoji, and does not have to be unique.

How long can Discord glitch text be?

It depends on the field. Messages allow 2,000 characters on a free account, About Me allows 190, and display names and server nicknames allow 32. Every combining mark counts against those numbers, which is why a display name fills up after about two glitched letters at high intensity.

Why did a bot change my nickname back?

Many servers run moderation bots that normalize or strip heavily marked nicknames, because tall stacks push the member list layout around for everyone in the server. It is a server rule, not a Discord one. Ask a moderator, or use a lighter effect.

Does glitch text work in Discord channel names?

Partly. Discord lowercases and strips certain characters from text channel names, so results are inconsistent. Category names and voice channel names are more permissive and are where most servers put decorative text.
